Essure removal

Careful, complete surgical removal of Essure implants, with honest guidance on what removal means for your body and your future.

What is Essure removal?

Essure was a permanent birth control device made of small metal and fiber coils placed in the fallopian tubes. It is no longer sold in the United States, and some patients choose removal because of symptoms they attribute to the device, or simply because they want it out.

We listen to your story first and look at every possible cause of your symptoms, then offer careful removal when that is the right step.

Who may benefit

Patients with Essure who have pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or other symptoms they and their provider attribute to the device, and patients who want the device removed for personal reasons. We take your symptoms seriously and also look for other causes.

Before surgery

We review your history and imaging, confirm where the implants are, and talk through what removal will involve for your tubes and uterus, so there are no surprises.

During surgery

Removal is typically done laparoscopically. Because the coils sit within the tube, the surgeon often removes the affected part of the fallopian tube, or the whole tube, taking care to remove the device intact. Some patients need additional procedures.

Recovery

Recovery depends on the approach and how much needs to be removed. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions and schedule follow-up to see how your symptoms are responding.

If you hope to conceive

Removal usually means taking out part or all of the fallopian tube, so natural conception is generally not possible afterward, and pregnancy would typically require IVF. If a future pregnancy matters to you, we will talk through your options before surgery.

Risks to know

Anesthesia risks, bleeding, infection, injury to nearby organs, and scar tissue are possible. If a piece of the device is left behind or breaks, further surgery may be needed, and symptoms may not resolve completely after removal.

Why we offer it

We listen first, look at every possible cause of your symptoms, and offer careful, complete removal when it is the right choice. You will always know what we plan to do and why.
